Would it be possible to run a mudclient type thing off a flash applet? and if so, how?

Yes it is possible. As is there are quite a few java applet based clients, although these have the restriction that they must be served from the mud server. Flash can also connect back to the server although there are also some restrictions in that case also.
fmud is a flash client, but there may be others.
