What are some good strategy games for beginners?

I have a DS, a Wii, a PS2 and an iPod Touch. I 've played advanced wars and don' t know of many other games that would be good for a beginner, I 'm only with respect to wars of progress. How do I get better and start playing games more advanced? Where to learn good strategies?
